The American Public Health Association is launching a campaign to help Americans remember to check and restock their emergency preparedness kits. The “Get Ready: Set Your Clocks, Check Your Stocks” campaign is aimed at getting households to gather and refresh their emergency supplies before a potential disaster occurs on every daylight savings time adjustment. The next daylights savings change occurs on March 9th, when we will spring forward one hour.
“Since we already use daylight saving as an opportunity to ensure that our families are prepared for an emergency, it’s a great time for us also to make sure that we have a fully stocked emergency kit and that none of the perishable items have expired,” said Georges C. Benjamin, APHA’s executive director. “When we spring forward this year, we want every American to make sure their family has a preparedness kit to fall back on in the event of an emergency.”

A storm that hit the Franconia Ridge this past weekend stranded two New Hampshire Hikers overnight forcing helicopter search teams to rescue them from the icy conditions. 36 year old James Osborne and his climbing partner, 55 year old Laurence “Fred” Frederickson, were half way across the two mile ridge on a day hike when a horrible storm swooped in with wind gusts of up to 75 m/h. The storm stranded the men at roughly 4,700 feet overnight. The next morning the men attempted to head down off of the ridge.
Fatigue, however, got the most of the hikers and both ended up face down in the snow and unconscious. This was how the Army National Guard helicopters found them at roughly 7:30pm. Osborne was rushed to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon and treated for hypothermia. Fredrickson died of hypothermia by the time the helicopters took him off the mountain.

Knives are essential. Whether you are at home or enjoying the great outdoors, you need high quality knives that are in top-notch condition. Of course, in order to achieve the greatest level of effectiveness from a knife, keeping the blade well sharpened is fundamental. Therefore, it is imperative that you do have access to a knife sharpener that can serve your needs at home but also travel with you when you are out and about enjoying the world.
When it comes to an effective and efficient knife sharpener that will satisfy all of your sharpening and maintenance objectives, you will want to focus your attention on durability and portability. Many manufacturers make the claim that a knife sharpener needs to be substantial in size in order to be appropriately durable. In reality, this is not the case. By making certain that you pay attention to the material of which the knife sharpener is constructed, you can get a scaled down unit that will be portable but also designed and constructed to stand the test of time.

If you are a person who enjoys the great outdoors and owns hunting knives or who intends to purchase this type of gear in the future, listen up. In addition to paying attention to the kind of hunting knives you own or consider purchasing, you also need to understand what you need to do to manage that knife safely. This particularly is the case when it comes to the issue of child safety and ensuring your knife does not cause them harm.
It is important that you keep hunting knives well out of the reach of your children. In this regard, there are products in which you can secure hunting knives to ensure that they do not end up in the curious hands of children. Keep a hunting knife up high, in a hunting gear box or bag. Keep the knife in a safety sheath so that the knife blade will never accidentally fall open. If you can, consider owning a liner lock folding knife. These knives are made for safety with a locking mechanism to ensure the knife stays closed when it is supposed to and opens only when needed.

The American Hiking Society along with the National Park Service Trails has organized a special hike and learn trip at the Lookout Mountain Land Conservancy (LMC) to take place this Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 10:00am – 1:00pm. The 3.5 mile hike, being called the “Take a Hike into Volunteering” will enable participants to get out and enjoy the trail system, the great outdoors and some physical activity. They will also learn about the activities of the LMC, the Reflection Arboretum and Botanical Garden, and the Tennessee River Gorge Trust. The organizers hope that participants will also be inspired to volunteer for some of these organizations and parks activities. Interested participants can register by contacting Sarah Quattrochi.
