In tonight’s broadcast, NBC Nightly News had a segment on the popular compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, used in many homes and offices these days. These lights have been sold as the best light bulb option because they are widely-considered to use 50% less energy than an incandescent bulb, thereby being more environmentally friendly.  However, as Coast LED Knife Blog readers know, these bulbs do in fact pose an environmental risk.

The technology in these incandescent bulbs utilizes mercury which has been shown to cause kidney and brain damage.  Though only small amounts of the neurotoxin are in any one bulb, it is still enough to contaminate large amounts of drinking water if exposed. The segment included an interview with a woman who called poison control when she dropped one of her CFLs. She was told that clean-up would be possible, for a fee of $2000.

The movies love to shock audiences with incredible bar fights and unrealistic gang brawls.  In theater, these scenes show the gruesome nature of hand-to-hand combat.  Combatants pick up and use whatever they have handy to take down their enemy. Too often in street fights, we see small pocket knives and folding blades used as a primary weapon.  This has the potential to foster thoughts that pocket knives have the strength and safety needed to take down an assailant.  So, let’s be clear.  The primary use of pocket knives is that of a TOOL for use in one’s job, repair work, or hunting and fishing. It is not designed as an offensive weapon or for self-defense purposes.

From a straight legal perspective, the use of a folding knife in a self-defense scenario can constitute a major felony. Using a pocket knife is dangerous because these blades, though often very durable and well-built, are not meant to harm a person’s body.  Fighting with these blades could result in the knife actually turning and/or folding on you.

The phrase “green energy” has a huge buzz surrounding it nowadays but the concept of conserving energy has been around for decades. In the past, however, conserving energy often proved impractical because need exceeded the ability to conserve. These days, however, there are a number of environmentally friendly products that are far more practical for use. LED lights are such products.

Whether they are used in flashlights, bicycle lights or home lighting, LED lights provide a far more environmentally friendly product that the traditional lights of the past. There are a number of reasons for this.  LED lights require less energy to operate for extended periods of time. This is why having LED lights installed into homes and businesses is becoming more popular.  In the same way, when you charge a LED light it will not require recharging as quickly as a standard light would. Also, if the LED light system is battery operated it will require fewer batteries and those batteries that it does use will last a long, long time.
