Billy Goes Hunting Educates Children on Hunting Heritage
Sunday, March 23rd, 2008
Families that have held onto the hunting tradition are becoming fewer over the years. Children may not understand why families hunt, why for some it is very important and how to answer questions they may be asked about hunting. Most children’s books place hunting in a negative light. For some families who maintain the hunting tradition, this may create some conflict and confusion for their children. Matthew Butler faced this very issue with his children and decided to do something about it. He wrote Billy Goes Hunting.
Billy Goes Hunting is a story about a boy who asks the question “Why do we hunt?” to his grandfather one day and his grandfather’s response. The book was written to open the door for further conversations with kids about the reasons for hunting and the appropriate times to do so.
