Basic Knife Safety

Whether wielding a fixed blade hunting knife or using a simple folding knife, it is always important to practice good knife safety. Knowing and using some simple knife safety tips will keep you from slicing the tip of your finger in the kitchen or gouging the palm of your hand while gutting a fish.   The following are some basic safety tips to keep in mind when handling any type of knife.

  • Store your knife in a safe place, preferably in a sheath, leather case or, for kitchen knives, a butcher block. This will keep people from cutting themselves accidentally while digging in bags, boxes or drawers.
  • If you are not using a fixed blade knife, use a liner lock knife where possible to decrease the likelihood of a folding knife blade collapsing on your fingers.
  • Your 1st grade teacher had it right – when holding sharp objects like scissors or knives, always walk with them and always carry them with the blade tip facing straight down.  This helps decrease the potential for tripping and falling on the blade directly.
  • Never leave children unattended using a knife.  Even if you think your child is mature enough to understand knife safety, accidents happen.  Supervision will reduce the risk of accidental cuts.
