Spring Chinook Run Looms Ahead

Chinook salmonBill Monroe, a columnist on “all things outdoors” for The Oregonian, published an article today answering questions from his readers about the upcoming spring Chinook salmon run. See what he had to say and what anglers should be getting ready for.

First, he encouraged anglers not to be discouraged with the recent week’s lack-luster performance. “C’mon … it’s the first week of March!” he writes, “There’s a reason it’s called a ’spring’ instead of ‘winter’ Chinook run.”

Camping Gear: The Essentials

C9150As I stare out the window this morning, taking in the gloriousness of a sunny day, I can’t help but feel like spring is here, and it’s time to break out the camping gear. Apparently, Marc Phillippe Babineau had the same thought — last week, he published an article entitled “Essential Tools for Camping“.

R.I.P. Sam Hamilton, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Director

Sam HamiltonSam D. Hamilton, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, died Saturday after suffering from chest pains while skiing in Colorado. He was 54.

Coast extends its sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Hamilton and wishes to express gratitude for the hard work and dedication he displayed during his years of service.

Spring Chinook and Sturgeon Seasons Set for Oregon and Washington

odfw_logoOregon and Washington just adopted spring Chinook salmon and sturgeon fishing seasons for the Columbia and Willamette rivers yesterday during a joint state hearing, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).

The Columbia River spring Chinook seasons are based on a forecast of 470,000 returning upriver spring Chinook, said ODFW. As a conservative measure, the two states decided to adopt a 40 percent buffer, leaving a combined harvest guideline of 17,200 fish in the sport fishery downstream of Bonneville Dam. Similarly, the sturgeon seasons are based on a recreational harvest guideline of 19,200 fish, including 3,600 in the Willamette.

Lifetime Licenses — Worth the Money?

IdahoTyler Caine, Jr. just made the deal of a lifetime, literally. According the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the Boise native is now the proud owner of a lifetime hunting license — at only 5 months-old.

Well, obviously, his family made the purchase for him, but one day the young boy will be extremely grateful for the gift. As long Tyler stays an Idaho resident, once he reaches 10 years of age he can hunt without having to buy another license for the rest of his life.
