Washington: Snowshoe Snoqualmie Pass

The Washington State Forest Service is now offering interpretive snowshoe walks on Snoqualmie Pass, available through March 29, 2009.

The forest service will offer two regular programs this year.

Washington: Fourteen Parks Fired

Apparently, it’s not just people losing jobs during this economic crisis. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission may close 14 of its 121 state parks.  Why?  To save money.   

A commission spokeswoman told a local Washington newspaper, The Olympian, it’s looking at transferring low-priority parks to local governments or nonprofit groups. For example, the commission would close the marine day-use park near Lacey, Tolmie State Park, citing that the park draws mostly local visitors and doesn’t maintain a campground.

South Africa: Garden Route National Park

Garden Route National Park (GRNP) is now only months away, says South African National Parks (SANParks).

According to ABC-of-Hiking.com, there are only three other places in the world where residents live inside the borders of a nationally-recognized park: Italy, Canada, and the USA. This makes the new Garden Route National Park the first of its kind on the African continent.

Canada: Camping Tax Hikes

Last Friday, Canada’s Saskatchewan Party announced a series of tax hikes for its provincial parks. Included in the hike: a $2 increase to the daily camping fee, doubling the reservation service fee to $10, and a new $7 charge when reservations are changed. The fee increases will mean $1.25 million more for government each year, says a local paper in Saskatchewan.

The Star Phoenix says Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) is calling the increases an “unhappy camper tax.”
