Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Coast LED Lenser Micro HeadlampThe March 2010 issue of Backpacker Magazine featured a great review of Coast LED Lenser’s Micro Headlamp. Backpacker dubbed the LED headlamp “Lightest and Cheapest” of five headlamps tested.

Camping Gear: The Essentials

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

C9150As I stare out the window this morning, taking in the gloriousness of a sunny day, I can’t help but feel like spring is here, and it’s time to break out the camping gear. Apparently, Marc Phillippe Babineau had the same thought — last week, he published an article entitled “Essential Tools for Camping“.

In his article, Babineau lists and describes a number of tools you shouldn’t leave home without. Among them are:

Coast Products: “Everyone Friendly”

Friday, February 26th, 2010

7831Yesterday, I wrote a post about a new line of so-called “female friendly” LED products. The company releasing the “products with a pink twist” said it was due to the lack of uncomplicated and lightweight solutions. Frankly, I beg to differ. First, let’s look at battery life. I mentioned yesterday that the Torch lasts for a whopping 15 minutes before it needs a recharge. The X21 lasts 600 hours. Additionally, the X21 uses D-cell batteries, which you can pretty much find anywhere. The Torch uses a custom battery pack that looks like a pain to recharge. And what happens when that breaks? I’m sure the manufacturer would replace it for a small fee…

Flashlights: Why Pay More for Less?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

8417In short, there isn’t a good answer.

A laser company recently manufactured a flashlight that retails at $300. The light is said to be the brightest flashlight in the world, producing around 4,100 lumens. Legend even has it that the instrument has the ability to light fires and scramble eggs.
