Moose Tests Positive for CWD

Officials in western Wyoming report that a 3-year-old female moose has contracted Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

CWD is a fatal neurological disease affecting deer, elk, and moose.  Symptoms include weight loss, abnormal behavior, excessive drooling, drooping of the ears and head, and loss of body condition.

Currently, there are no known human health implications.  Still, animals seen exhibiting the conditions listed above should be reported to a local conservation officer, fish and game office, or wildlife health laboratory.

In some states, like Idaho, Fish and Game routinely tests for CWD and have established programs allowing hunters to submit samples of their game for testing.

Fish and Game officials continue to caution hunters to wear latex gloves when field dressing animals.  Additionally, hunters should avoid handling brain and spinal tissue.
