Camping Tips for Beginners

Hiking the Appalachians

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Maine Chapter will host authors Ron and Nancy Chase on Thursday, October 23, 2008.  Ron and Nancy, AMC Maine Executive Committee alumni, will give a presentation on hiking the scenic mountains of New England.

Hike Mount St. Helens Blast Zone

Oregon Peak Adventures and Portland Community College have paired up to offer a Hike the Blast Course through the Recreation and Wellness Department.  The course is a 12 mile hike in the mountains blast zone and covers crossing the Pumice Plain to Loowit Falls located at the base of “The Breech.”  Participants will hike to Windy Ridge from there and be picked up.  The course includes a classroom orientation on October 2, 2008 from 6:30pm – 9:30pm. The hike will be on October 5.  The area is rich in history and natural beauty. Participants will get to discuss the 1980 eruption and how the area has changed and grown since the blast.

The course costs $150 per person plus $29 for tuition.

Florida Hiking Festival Kicks Off This Friday

The highly anticipated Florida Hiking Festival, part of the Florida Trails Association’s annual conference, is kicking off Friday, March 28th in White Springs. The participants will have the option to take on several different hikes, all starting in White Springs in Suwannee County.  Hikers of all skill levels will be able to hike the Florida Trail, Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, and some other off-road bike trails.  Demonstrations and educational seminars about the hiking area and safety will also take place during the weekend.

To register, call 1-877-Hike-FLA or register onsite on Friday. The festival will run through March 30th.
