Sturgeon Season Opens New Year’s Day
Saturday, December 27th, 2008The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced that fishing season for Columbia River white sturgeon will open New Year’s Day. WDFW says that rules similar to those in 2008 will apply but with tighter catch limits below Bonneville Dam.
Fishery managers from Washington and Oregon said that in order to compensate for high harvest levels in 2008, catch limits will be 2,000 fish less in the lower Columbia River and adjoining tributaries in 2009. According to WDFW, the new catch limits were adopted following a decision by the fish and wildlife commissions of both states to extend the management agreement for 2006-08 through 2009.
